|
|
Im looking for any info anyone can give me on how to mod a truck so that it has a ball joint pivot point on the hanger.
Google hasnt been much of a help to me unfortunately.
I know Fitz has the "knowhow" as he posted this image of his mod
Once I have a clue how to do it Im going to try it on some Chinese popout trucks I have and depending on the success of this maybe even on a spare Indie truck
Feel free to post any links to truck mods in general if you have them as Im sure others may have an interest. _________________ Do evil vegetarians worship Sultanis? |

Mosu, Rockin' Ron (he of the bearings) does modified trucks. Although he does with regular trucks, not randal style.
http://www.skatetechnology.com/trucks.html
He kind of goes into detail here in what he does. Honestly means nothing to me, but you can try and explain it to me some time. |

Holmsinator checked Rons site and he does truck Facing (the side bit where the bearing contacts is made real smooth and even) which I think I can do.
Im after removing the part of the truck which connects to the base plate and then inserting a rod with ball joint end into the modified hanger, unfortunately Im not sure of what my options are on this one.
Quidjam, thanks I'll give this a go as you suggest. Ive also tried to check out Silverfishlongboarding but havent found any threads on the subject
Merde I just realised that the link http://montrealsessions.forumactif.com/ is to a french website, now I have to get my wife to translate. _________________ Do evil vegetarians worship Sultanis? |

this pic shows a bennett with facing and a speed ring left on the original hangers face.
It also shows a brass ball joint hanging of the pivot end of the hanger. Thats the bit I want. looks like I need to cut or grind (or machine) off about 1.5cm of the pivot end of the hanger then drill a hole cut a thread and then bolt the ball joint rod into the "pivot stump"
If anyone follows that and can make suggestions on how to Id really appreciate it. _________________ Do evil vegetarians worship Sultanis? |

Fitz, where are you???
And Richie, you have the skillz too for sure.
(Good photo of the built-in speed ring. I believe some of these modders even face the end of the axle nut to make sure it's perfectly square. Gotta have square nuts ) _________________ http://www.skateboardracing.org.au - ASRA, the home of Australian skateboard racing |

Slalomboarder and Silverfish have got stack of truck mods but most are after shots.
Its not that tough though all you need is the ball pivot. Hack a bit off the truck, the length of the pivot. Drill a hole in the end part you hacked off and tap it out, screw in pivot with a dash of locktite. |

Bear in mind you are going to have the corresponding size cup fitted into the baseplate (I think) - I'm hazarding a guess that the whole idea of the modification is the make the pivoting part of the hanger fit precisely into the baseplate without any of the excess side-to-side movement as you get with a standard hanger/bushing arrangement. If that makes sense.
To fit a cup into the baseplate may well require machining out the hole to the correct size for the cup, or somehow filling in the hole and precisely machining out a hole to suit the ball joint. Seems the fitting of the ball joint in the hanger is the easy bit. _________________ Old enough to Know better! Old enough not to care! |

Yes i've been thinking about, ball pivots,
(oh so many dirty jokes could be put in this thread).
They remind me of tie rod ends, havnt looked yet but what about
go carting parts?
Bondiboy I think another advantage of the ball pivot is the pivot only
contacts on a small area, sortof at the end, when the hanger pivots the
skinny shaft doesnt contact the side of the pivot rubber and bind/restrict
any movement.
On my force and randals the pivot was cast badly so i ,by hand,
filed them all nice and smooth and symmetrical so they "should"
pivot more effeciently.
Wayne.
ps. check this out, oh yeah, bring on the lathe!!!!!!!!!!!

I just stepped up and have made a double spehrical bearing truck from an old Gull Wing street type truck.Farking amazing the change of performance. It feels like kick turning with out lifting the nose.I will now do a tracker front truck and see what it wil do.These bearings only cost me $7 each.I have been able to use 10 mm bearings for both the pivot and king pin as the gullwing baseplate had enough meat in them to do it.If some trucks don't have enough metal in the pivot area I can get 8 mm sphericals. I am looking forward to doing some bennetts soon. The combination of a ball pivot and spherical on the king pin would work good too. This would be a lot less work.
I pushed once and was able to pump all the way around the block which just about farked me.There was a little bit of up hill as well.Radicals do the same but a little better.I would love to try a radicl again as it was a while ago that I rode one.I may have come up with a poor mans radical.
I am having heaps of fun farking about with this shit, very interesting indeed. |
